Shopping and travelling cannot be separated. They're like best friends. However when you're travelling in a foreign country, you have no clue which item is worth your money. This post is dedicated to those of you who want some advice on what to buy in Korea and will be telling you some of the things to buy in Korea that are popular, reasonably priced and uniquely Korean.

1. Cosmetics

Korea is the perfect destination if you're a make-up lover. The popularity of K beauty has increased dramatically due to Hallyu (Korean wave) and also the quality of the products themselves. The K beauty craze is insane and the number of cosmetic brands and shops are proving that it sure is. Cities and streets are full of cosmetic stores which all have distinctive concept and style of their own.

Let's get to know about one of the most popular cosmetic brands in Korea, also some useful tips and recommendations.

Innisfree, well known for its theme of "Jeju Island", is one of the most popular cosmetic brands in Korea. The concept of the whole brand is usually focused on being natural and simple but trendy at the same time. It's known as the top selling cosmetic brand (low-end brands wise) to tourists, Chinese in particular. Probably because the concept appeals to almost all age groups. Their skincare products are usually the best sellers of the brand.

Etude House is perceived as the princessy, girly and bubbly brand targeted to a relatively younger age group. The brand has lots of colors and vividness. The brand is mainly focused on the make-up products than skin care products and it sure does offer you a wide range of color make up products such as eye shadows, lipsticks and nail polishes.

As you can kind of guess from the name of the brand, Skinfood, the brand has the healthy, natural yet vibrant image / concept. The brand says that cosmetic products we apply on our skin are supposed to be as important and healthy as the food we eat because both of them are what we do on a daily basis and have a direct influence on our body / skin.

The products have a rather wide range of price, some of the cheapest skincare products start from 5,000 KRW but the premium lines can cost over 60,000 KRW.

Brands like VDL with the chic and strong image are becoming extremely popular in Korea lately as female consumers have started to change their stance towards the stereotypical feminine appearance expected for women. The brand offers you more professional make-up products compared to other brands mentioned above and they can be a little more pricey.

To give you some tips when shopping at a cosmetic store in Korea, first, make sure if they're having any promotion at the moment because they usually do. Especially face masks, the No.1 must-buy item, are often on a very generous deal such as buy 1 get 1 promotion. Lots of brands hold a store-wide discount sale quite regularly so you need to check which brand is having a sale and which is not.

There will be 'Tax Free' signs on the store walls as well so don't forget to bring your passport and get your stuff tax-free.

2. Optical items

You might have not expected this but optical items such as glasses and contact lenses are way cheaper compared to other countries. The variety of options and the reasonable price make it irresistible to not buy them.

You do not need to bring your own prescription cause they will be offering you optometry on site, free of charge. You choose the frame and bring it to the staff in the store then they will get your eyes examined. Choose the type of lens and make the payment. If they are not too busy, you will be able to get your glasses in less than a few hours.

Price varies, because the options are too diverse, but some of the cheapest frames start from 10,000 KRW. The price including the frame, optometry and the prescribed lens would cost about 50,000 KRW in total at the lowest and up. Considering that the procedure is super easy and convenient, plus heaps of options, it's hard to come across this reasonable price anywhere else in the world.

Recommended brands

- Low-end : Look optical, Glassbaba

- High-end : Gentle Monster, Carin

You may not have a variety of options when it comes to contact lenses / color contacts in your country, especially if you're from Europe or the Western side of the world. We do, in Korea. There are stores specialized in contact lenses that only sell contact lenses or the related products.

The options are almost infinite ; from regular transparent contacts to color contacts for daily use / cos-playing. Once you're done choosing which design to buy, tell the clerk that you want them prescribed and tell him your vision then he will get you the one right away. You make the payment, and you're good to go.

They would have buy 2 get 1 promotions at some times so ask the clerk if there's any deal going on in the store.

Recommended brands

- O-lens, Lens story, Lens-me

3. Socks (say again?)

Yes, socks. The things that you put on your feet. I get it, it's weird that someone would recommend you buy socks in a foreign country. But they're so cute, cheap and practical! A pair would usually cost 1,000 KRW, isn't that an absolute bargain?

So many different and unique designs are available almost anywhere you go in Korea. You will find a number of street stalls selling socks and there should be socks with your all time favorite cartoon characters / K-pop stars printed on them.

The stalls would usually sell stockings, leggings and all that sort as well with unbeatable price. Quality's not 100% guaranteed but they're still pretty good. They make a fun souvenir gift to give away to your friends.
