Boryeong city located in the coastal area of Southwest Chungcheongnam-do is usually peaceful with ports and mountains, but turns into world's most festive area in summer. Boryeong Mud Festival is a unique festival that is basically all about playing hard with mud at Daecheon Beach.
Boryeong has a 136 km long coastline that consists of fine sea mud rich in minerals, germanium, bentonite which highly enhances skin conditions. Since the mud of the area deserved more attention and love, the city initiated businesses to promote items made of its mud. Didn't work out so well and therefore the city planned the festival to attract more visitors and promote the local economy. So this popular event, which rakes in millions of dollars in revenue annually, actually started with rather humble beginning.
This exciting mud festival korea has been largely loved by international tourists in addition to the locals since its first launch in 1998. The festival was designated as "Republic of Korea Global Foster Festival" in 2015 which shows the unbeatable reputation of Boryeong Mud Festival. In fact, Boryeong Mud Festival has not only been winning a number of awards from South Korean Government since 2006 but also internationally, winning awards from IFEA World (World Festival Association) for 8 consecutive years.
In the 17th Boryeong Mud Festival held in 2014, approximately 329 million visitors (280,000 foreign tourists included) took part in the festival.
There are a number of programs available ; mud pool slide, giant mud bath, mud mob-scene with DJs, mud soap making, mud prison, color mud body paint and so much more.
